A symbol can encode the right data and look sharp on screen, then fail after it is printed on film, a curved container, or another difficult substrate. The measurements below address the artwork, and a printed sample still needs verification.

| Contrast | Use dark modules on a light background. Avoid inverted symbols and red modules because some scanners use red illumination. |
| Placement | Flat area, away from seams, folds, and heavy curvature. Curved surfaces distort the module grid. |
Higher ECC adds modules. At a fixed module size, that makes the symbol larger; at a fixed overall size, it makes each module smaller. Level M is the usual packaging default because excessive error correction can work against the available pack space.
Digital preflight checks size, quiet zone, contrast, and encoded data in the artwork file before plates are cut. It cannot measure how the ink and substrate will behave. Have a qualified verifier scan a printed sample before the full run.
