Dual marking: running UPC and a 2D code on the same package
During the Sunrise 2027 transition, most retail packaging will carry the existing linear UPC or EAN and a new 2D code. Retailers upgrade scanners on different schedules, so a package still has to work at checkouts that only read the linear symbol.
The double-scan problem
A scanner can read both symbols and ring the item twice. POS software generally handles this by extracting the GTIN and de-duplicating within a short window. That process depends on both symbols encoding the same GTIN. A mismatch can connect one package to two product records.
Verify that the GTIN in the 2D code matches the GTIN in the linear barcode. A mismatch can attach the wrong price or product record at checkout.
Placement
- Keep the symbols visually separate. Each needs its own clear space, and quiet zones cannot overlap.
- Do not place the 2D code where a hand naturally covers it at checkout.
- Avoid the panel that faces down in a shelf-ready case if scanning happens at the case level.
- Flat areas only. Seams, folds, and tight curves distort the module grid.
When to remove the linear code
Keep dual marking until the relevant retail partners confirm in writing that they can accept the package without the linear symbol. Removing the UPC earlier can leave the item unreadable at checkouts that have not completed the transition.
Batching the change
Artwork revisions carry the cost of new plates, proofs, and approvals. Add the 2D code to a scheduled revision when the timing allows it, starting with SKUs whose packaging is already due for a change.
