The EU Digital Product Passport, in plain terms

The Digital Product Passport framework comes from the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation. A product needs a passport when an applicable product-specific rule requires one. That rule defines the information and access requirements; a general summary cannot determine whether a specific product is covered.

How the dates are set

Product requirements come through delegated acts. Each act can set the data fields, carrier, placement, identifier granularity, access rights, and transition period for that product group. There is no single DPP deadline for every product.

The Commission's 2025–2030 working plan prioritises product groups including iron and steel, aluminium, textiles/apparel/footwear, furniture and mattresses, and tyres. Priority in a working plan is not the same as an operative obligation.

Requirements that affect the data carrier

The framework anticipates a persistent unique product identifier connected through a physical data carrier, machine-readable and interoperable data, long-term availability, and backup arrangements. The applicable delegated act controls the details.

Where GS1 Digital Link fits

The regulation does not mandate GS1. It calls for open standards and interoperability. GS1 Digital Link may satisfy several of those technical needs and is already used in retail, but the legal requirement should be checked against the applicable delegated act for the product category.

What to do now if you export to the EU

1. Establish clean, persistent product identification before choosing the data carrier.
2. Start collecting supplier declarations and material data. The source data usually requires more work than the page that displays it.
3. Confirm the export format and resolver-migration process before selecting a provider. The applicable rules may require long-term availability and interoperable data.
